Italy is full of cats: country cats, city cats, polite cats, rakish cats, fat cats (!) and hungry cats. Just the other day when I went to throw away the garbage a cat leapt out of the box and made me jump a mile.
Every town has at least one Cat Lady (or man, but usually a lady – why?) – that person who puts out an old tin pan of food for the cats whom no one else is feeding. Cats come and go as they wish. If a door or window is open, sooner or later a cat is going to go through it.
Last time I was in Rome I noticed there were a lot fewer cats than the previous visit. Perhaps there is a cat control policy there now – I hope so. Anyone know?
I’ve been addicted to taking photos of cats since we moved here. No matter what the scene, a cat seems to make it more picturesque. Over on the right in Links you’ll find Cats of Italy – click on it (if you dare!) and you will be whisked away to a web album of part of my collection. I really DID edit some of them out – honest. (It took a lot of self-control not to put all of Luciano’s portraits in.) I recommend using the Slideshow option if you really are going to look at all those cats.
Nice Post
Thanks! There are additions to the photo album every now and then.
Thanks for all the cat pix. They brought me much pleasure. I have roughy 4000 pictures on my iphone, and about 95 % are of my cats. I even delete the blurry and boring ones. I’m tempted to put them on my blog every day, but try to restrain myself to only now and then.
Margaret, why not put them all in an album and let other cat lovers see them too? There are never too many cat pictures!
My Lit criticism teacher has an answer to why is it usually a cat lady: mothering instincts. Although she has never mothered a human baby, she can’t leave a crying cat unattendend. I’m not a cat lady myself, but I’ll acknowlege that they make great subjects for comic strips, such as I have on my blog.

Good point about the mothering instincts… I hadn’t thought of that. Now I will go take a look at your blog, see you in a minute.
Oh Louise – you do have a way with the camera when it comes to cats! I envision you publishing a lovely calendar – get on that, would you?
Thrilled to see my 3 ruffians pictured. They all look somewhat older, wiser, and more experienced (read fatter) than those youthful shots show…rather like their keeper.
Cats– I adored all your cat pictures! We hiked in Crete last October, and I was charmed by the cats- and also dogs- who made their way lying under tables in restaurants, most of which were open on at least one side. I have almost as many pictures of them as I do of Cretan goats– and that’s saying something!
Of course your Scottish kitty is a Brit. He’s warming his toes in front of an Aga.

La mia Stellina è la più bella di tutti…….. Alcune foto sono veramente artistiche. Brava Louise!
Whatever cats are within range are automatically drawn to Louise. The feral cats here on Cape Cod do not act anything like the ones that cross Louise’s path. A non-Italy note: The island of Kauai is apparently overrun with wild chickens and roosters. I’ll be interested in seeing how many show up when Louise visits.
