Last week I visited a large department store in nearby Mesa, Arizona. I strolled through the gentleman’s department, hoping to find a Christmas present for my brother-in-law, but I had no luck. There were plenty of gifts for men, but they all seemed to be packaged in leather boxes and to cost a trillion dollars – just not appropriate for giver or givee.
One of the gift items was what I imagine was called an Executive Tool Kit. It was a large leather case containing a wide assortment of shiny new tools: wrenches, screw drivers, sockets, and so forth. A young couple was examining it in passing, and the young man picked up the largest wrench from the case and said, “I can’t believe they just leave this stuff out like this.” I thought to myself, ‘neither can I; someone might steal it.’ But that wasn’t his point. He continued, “A terrorist might come along and take this, and then what might happen?.”
Huh? A terrorist in Dillards in downtown Mesa? And then what? Take a salesclerk hostage? Well, I suppose it could happen, and I certainly can’t make light of potential terrorist threats to the U.S. But isn’t it sad that an able-bodied young man would look at a set of tools that he should covet, and instead worry about terrorists? I sense a general low-level fear here in the States – fear of the future, fear for the economy, fear of terrorists, fear of strangers. It is disquieting and disheartening and more than a little disturbing…

Let me add a voice to the choir.
I’ve maintained for several years that we are now the home of the “not so free” and the “not so brave”.
amen…
I agree with Pidge…but this fear thing has been going on for so long now! I still remember 2 years ago when family from Hawaii were flying in to meet me for a short vacation around Europe. My sister wanted to register with the US Embassy just in case something “bad” happened. It doesn’t surprise me that she is backing out on a future trip to Asia….
Oh nooooo – is that your trip to Thailand? I hope you will go anyway. We figure everything in life is a risk, especially driving to the airport (!) – I don’t know exactly who profits from spreading fear, but no doubt someone does. It’s just too bad – we’re supposed to be Land of the Free and Home of the Brave here – what happened to that? (oh, and don’t get me started on justice for all…) Happy holidays, in any event!
great choice of image!
My theory is that the entire American population is being affected by what is billed as TV evening “news.” It’s Not news – it’s entertainment/sensationalism/comment and often seems purposefully to be created to instill fear and/or deepen our ideological differences. I guess that’s what sells… And sadly, I don’t find the BBC, Bundesregierung Deutschland, AFP, Beijing Review, or Asian News International much better. It seems people everywhere want it short and B&W. sigh…
But let’s fact it, some ‘networks’ (cable!) play the fear card more than others. Mr. Beck, for instance, likes to spread panic about the economy – buy gold, buy gold! Two minutes later he is in an advertisement for a company that sells gold. Fair and balanced? You be the judge! Well, we’re all singing in the same choir here…
